About the Artist
As a former psychology major turned studio painter, Jessica Dawn’s vivid abstracts plunge the viewer into internal narrative and lend a deeper appreciation of Rorschach.
While at the Watkins College of Art and Design in Nashville, Jessica began experimenting with mixed media. Starting with wood, trees, glass, and pages from books and her own hands as a texture palette, within two years, she realized a more organic, primordial feel existed with a combination of joint compound, wax, and oil. It would become a medium that would stick with her to this day. In Jessica’s work one can visualize the experimentation process progressing into a refined, stylistically-marked approach.
“Painting was a way to disassemble and piece together the world around me. Only recently have I begun to involve the viewer in this process, with representational imagery, to convey a message or feeling to an observer other than myself… My early works consist of bits of images collected together from my own imaginings or memory. This body of work “Transitions” dates back three years, one of which I spent traveling, not painting, but only absorbing information,” said Jessica. “Each piece represents a transition from one another as I am always in transition.”
